Who am I and what I do?
Hello everyone, it’s been a while. It’s my first blog post here. 🥹I moving some of them from my Ko-Fi since is better for someone new here knowing what kind of creator I am,
As I continue writing more posts, I’ve gradually become more familiar with how to shape a blog entry and share my thoughts with all of you.
Today’s topic will be a bit longer, as it’s about something more personal. Although I’ve been active online under the name Sonata for many years, I realized I’ve never truly introduced myself properly — where I’m from, my interests, the movies and music I love, my dreams, and details like those.
In the past, I focused solely on “creating,” so I never imagined anyone would want to know more about “me” as a person. But as I’ve come to know more creators over time, I noticed they all value one important idea: letting fans get to know the person behind the work. It helps people move beyond simply “admiring” the creations, and allows them to form a deeper connection with the creator themselves.
About Me
The name I use online is Sonata. It comes from the name of a siren character from My Little Pony: Equestria Girls, a character I’ve always loved. It also became the English name I use in real life.
However, it isn’t a name I use very often in daily life, since the place I live is not an English-speaking country. I’m from Taiwan, an East Asian island located in the Pacific Ocean, situated between Japan, China, and the Philippines.
In my everyday life, I use Traditional Chinese. Unlike the Simplified Chinese or “Chinese characters” many people are more familiar with, Traditional Chinese contains far more intricate strokes and details. I feel fortunate that I never had to spend extra time learning such a complex writing system from scratch. Some people may have different opinions about whether Taiwan is a country, and while I respect everyone’s perspectives, I also have my own sense of identity.
It’s a warm and heartfelt place, where people often come together for the same cause. I really love that atmosphere. Even though I’m not particularly good at socializing, there are many people on this land who are deeply important to me.
Unfortunately, my body doesn’t adapt very well to the climate here — even though I was born and raised in this environment. The weather is humid, and the temperature changes drastically throughout the day, which often makes me sick. I’m still learning how to live alongside a climate like this🤧
About My Creations
I’m often drawn to outstanding works and beautifully written characters, and I hope that one day I’ll be able to create something just as captivating myself. I draw fanart very often, but I also deeply enjoy placing my own OCs into existing universes. I have OCs for many series, including Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, Powerpuff Girls Z, and Zootopia. I think most people probably discovered me through my Powerpuff Girls Z OCs, and I hope I’ll be able to share more stories and details about all of my characters in the future.
Whether it’s simply loving a character, or loving a pairing involving them, those feelings are what drive my creativity. Canon ships, OC × Canon ships, and OC ships — I enjoy all kinds of pairings as creative inspiration. Among them, I especially love OC × Canon ships. Seeing my OCs paired with characters I adore is one of the happiest things for me.
I sometimes project parts of myself onto certain OCs, which can also be described as a yumeship (selfship) — a style of creation where you imagine yourself forming a relationship with a character. Karin is an OC created from my own perspective and emotions. I know some people may dislike the culture of pairing oneself with fictional characters, but to me, it’s simply another form of creativity, and I don’t believe there is anything wrong with it. Especially when these characters have become such an important emotional support to me.
That said, you don’t necessarily have to see my OCs as representations of myself. Simply loving them as characters on their own would already make me genuinely happy. 🫶
About My Background and Dreams
I can confidently say that I was the definition of a “good student” growing up — the boring kind. Even though I loved drawing since childhood, I rarely had enough time to create my own art while I was still in school, because simply keeping up with academics already exhausted me.
I was often near the top of my class and seen as a model student by others. I didn’t really have hobbies or spend much time on the things adults considered “unimportant.” There were many series and characters I deeply loved, but I rarely had the chance to draw fanart for them.
That’s also why I almost never share works from a few years ago — because there was barely anything to share. Even when I truly loved certain fandoms, almost nobody knew about it. That feeling always left me a little sad and lonely.
I sometimes regret not leaving behind more traces of the things I once loved. But that’s alright. From now on, I want to slowly build those memories piece by piece.
I hope that someday in the future, I’ll be able to proudly share the creations I made for the works that mean so much to me.
The Works That Deeply Shaped Me
Beyond the main fandoms and creations I mentioned earlier, there are also several works that hold profound meaning to me. You could even say they form the “core” of who I am. I want to share them with you — perhaps we may unexpectedly discover that we have more in common than we thought.
My Hero Academia
As an incredibly popular series, I imagine many people are already familiar with it. Recently concluded, the story follows a boy who dreams of becoming a hero despite being born without power, tracing his journey from the moment he gains that power to the day he becomes a true hero.
One of the ideas this series consistently conveys is that no matter how strong or weak someone may be, everyone has their own strengths, and everyone possesses a unique power capable of protecting others.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
This is a story that wraps despair in the colors of hope and beauty. The magical girls within it are not only forced to fight evil witches, but must also confront human cruelty and the terrifying possibility of being consumed by their own despair.
It is my favorite magical girl series because of how “real” it feels. It dares to pierce through the glittering pink fantasy bubble that usually surrounds the genre, and that impact deeply stayed with me.
Medalist
The protagonist of this story, Inori Yuitsuka, is an eleven-year-old girl who dreams of becoming a figure skater. Even though she began skating far later than most children her age, she continues striving forward through pure determination, eventually standing on the same stage as her peers and competing alongside them.
To me, “everyone in this story is a gold medalist.” Every athlete chasing their dreams deserves admiration. No matter how late you begin, as long as you keep trying, you will always have the chance to prove your worth.
Blue Period
“Keeping the things you love as just a hobby — that’s the mindset of adults.” “You can’t expect doing what you love to always make you happy.”
These are lines from this work that left a deep impression on me.
At first, the protagonist is only mildly interested in art and firmly believes he cannot abandon reality to pursue something as uncertain as a dream. But after witnessing several people who devoted everything they had to the things they loved, he gradually finds the courage to chase his own dream as well.
For creators, this is an incredibly relatable story. Some people struggle to read it not because it is poorly written, but because it feels too real. The resonance itself becomes painful.
Of course, there are still many other works I love as well, such as Coco, My Little Pony, Ojamajo Doremi, Big Hero 6, Cardcaptor Sakura, and Witch Hat Atelier.(Yes… I really love magical themes.)
